At Kittywake we offer groups and community organisations two unique, traditional, wide beam barges as versatile floating venues at the heart of Wigan heritage, Wigan Pier. Whilst Cruising, there are a wide range of relaxing, interactive opportunities. Whether a relaxed, leisurely Cruise is desired or a more informative experience, all guests will be well looked after by our friendly, professional Crew.Sailing on Kittywake or Elleswake offers a unique perspective on the local area. Day or night, rain or shine, panoramic windows provide an alternative view of the geography and wildlife as well as the heritage of the Industrial Revolution and environs of Wigan, Leigh and the Douglas Valley all from the comfort of spacious cabins. Varied food options along with a fully licenced well stocked bar add to the enjoyment of the experience.
Elleswake has the benefit of wheelchair access and accessible toilets.
Cruises with our Amateur Historian
For an enhanced experience, Kittywake’s amateur historian can offer the perfect opportunity for guests to learn about not only local heritage, canals and transport but also the goods, employment, artwork and everyday lives of the people associated with the canals and surrounding industries. The on-board talk can be delivered formally or informally to offer ad-hoc information and answer questions, all information is delivered at an age appropriate level and there are artefacts and props to see, discuss and handle.
For those requiring more detail a variety of curriculum topics can be accommodated e.g.:
• History & Geography
o Three C’s (Cotton, Coal & Canal) Events beyond living memory.
o Development of Canals as a progression from utilization of rivers, life on the Cut (canal) in the 1700s onwards.
o Effects of the industrial revolution on the landscape, transport, villages & Cities. George Orwell (The road to Wigan Pier)
o Barge-wear painting and music.
Interactive Lock-working Experience
Offering our guests the opportunity to further immerse themselves in the canal experience. Under the close supervision of fully trained crew and with clear explanations, guests can experience the job of ‘Lock-lad or lass’ by operating the historic locks. Safety equipment (floatation jackets) provided, sensible clothes and shoes should be worn.
Trencherfield Mill Option
In partnership with Trencherfield Mill Steam Engine. This is one of the largest and finest working Steam engine examples of its type. Built over 100 years ago, and churning out a massive 2,500 horse power feeding the power-hungry machinery of Trencherfield Mill, it played an instrumental role in Wigan’s industrial development.

Kittywake has no minimum passenger number and is licensed to hold up-to 40 passengers maximum. Suggested maximum capacity may change due to the nature of the Cruise required. Please ask for details.
Elleswake has no minimum passenger number and is licensed to hold up-to 50 passengers maximum. Suggested maximum capacity may change due to the nature of the Cruise required. Please ask for details.
Static hire 2 hours - £150 (£45 per extra partial or full hour after 2 hours)
Cruising prices for Kittywake (NB. there is a £50 supplement for hire of Elleswake)
• 2-hour Cruise incorporating a double on-board lock experience £300. (£360 for Elleswake)
• 3-hour Cruise incorporating a double on-board lock experience £390. (£450 for Elleswake)
• 4-hour Cruise incorporating a double on-board lock experience £440. (£500 for Elleswake)
• Extra hours charged at £90 per hour.
